Club Vita longevity statistician

Date: August 4, 2020

Location: US, preferably New Jersey

Company Overview: Club Vita is a successful international data science business that specializes in the collection, analysis and licensing of data on longevity patterns and trends. Our services are used by pension plans, life insurers and reinsurers, advisors and capital market participants.

We are currently building out our US operations. We have recently hired a chief executive, Jennifer Haid, to lead the next phase of growth. Our multi-disciplinary team of 40, includes a team of 7 data scientists, led by Steven Baxter, a widely respected London-based thought leader in the field of longevity statistics. Our distributed statistics team currently has people located in Glasgow, London, Toronto and Zurich who communicate daily using video technology. We are looking to make our latest additional to our data science team in the US.

The Role

Demands on our statistics team are growing from a wide range of innovative areas, notably in applications of the data being collected from US pension plans. In the short term, the COVID-19 crisis has increased interest in demographic modelling, particularly the insights that can be brought by using ZIP codes to stratify data. The analysis of a new data set has created a great career opportunity for a statistician to join our rapidly growing US operations.

A strong background in statistical modelling and statistical programming (R or similar) are essential, with experience (either through work or degree) in demography, biostatistics, epidemiology (or a similar discipline) also highly desirable.

Responsibilities:

  • Data exploration and analysis to deliver commercially-focused insights
  • Calibration of longevity-based models and analytics including geo-demographic models, mortality rates and time series analysis
  • Technical involvement in research-based analytics relating to longevity and mortality

Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Very strong technical ability in statistics (essential)
  • Extensive experience of statistical modelling and data analysis (essential)
  • Experience in applying statistical results in a commercial environment (essential)
  • Practical knowledge and experience of R (or similar statistical language) (essential)
  • Broad awareness of data science techniques (highly desirable but not essential)
  • Experience in fields relating to biostatistics or epidemiology (or similar) (desirable)
  • Familiarity with the benefit design of US pension plans and actuarial valuation techniques (desirable but not essential)
  • Communicating statistical results in a commercial environment (desirable but not essential)
  • A degree, or evidence of similar levels of training through experience, in a statistical discipline, ideally with exposure to biostatistics, biomedical sciences or epidemiology
  • Live in the United States of America (New Jersey preferred, but not essential), and have a current work permit
  • Highly ambitious
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to apply analysis to real-world problems
  • Strong communicator; able to communicate technical results to non-specialist stakeholders
  • Open-minded approach to learning platforms and software
  • Ability to manage multiple competing deadlines
  • Creative problem solver and innovator
