Vaupel, James

\vaʊˈpɛl\, \ʤeɪmz\

James Vaupel is an American demographer. He is a leading proponent of the idea of the plasticity of longevity and has argued strongly against the idea of a limit to human life expectancy.

His famous 2002 paper with Jim Oeppen “Broken Limits to Life Expectancy” highlights how experts have consistently asserted that life expectancy is close to an ultimate ceiling, but that best-performance life expectancy (that is the highest observable life expectancy around the world) has consistently increased by around 2.5 years per decade for 160 years.
